Creating an animation in After Effects – learning activity

Assignment description

  • Work through my sunrise example step-by-step. Upload your version of this project to your WordPress blog. Please note, you will make a better impression if you make this animation your own. Don’t be scared to take things a little further and experiment.
  • Now you need to come up with a unique animation concept of your own. Create a storyboard for this concept. (Make sure that your idea is not too complicated, but don’t limit yourself by making it overly simple.) Scan your sketches in and upload it to your WordPress blog.
  • The next step is to create the file and folder structure. Please take a screenshot of your folder structure and hand it in along with your project.
  • Create your animation in After Effects. Upload your project file and your rendered animation to your WordPress blog.

First task is to recreate an animation from one of our lessons this week. An animation of the word «rise», the lesson interpreted it as a sunrise and since we were encouraged to change it up, I made it into a moon rise. I would say this introduced my to the camera-thingy, where you basically steer the shot. My animation felt like a magnifying glass just cruising over the image.

I tried out the animation mode on Procreate, much more manual process of stop motion. I made these to experiment with frame rates.

Currently in November, I’m redoing mandatory assignments for the final school portfolio, one of them includes the title screen animation. Here’s the mapping system for that composition, titles and add-on animations separated and music by it own.

Focusing on Design With A Conscience – Theoretical Assignment

Sheppard Fairey“Frank Shepard Fairey is an American contemporary graphic designer and illustrator who emerged from the skateboarding scene. He first became known for his ‘Andre the Giant Has a Posse’” (…OBEY…) (www.obeygiant.com) sticker campaign, in which he appropriated images from the comedic supermarket tabloid Weekly World News.

His work became more widely known in the 2008 U.S. presidential election, specifically his Barack Obama «Hope» poster.

The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston calls him one of today’s best known and most influential street artists. His work is included in the collections at The Smithsonian, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego, the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Analyze his poster for the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election and give your opinion on the use of style and its efficacy. Also critique the use of pastiche and typography.
Write one page (about 350 words) on your opinion of this design and substantiate your answers with examples.

My analyses

I remember the poster very well for 2008, I mean, it’s really iconic! The colors I think could represent the colors of the competing parties and them then blending and working together. The slogan it self is very in the time, it in the year of the finance crises and the chance of having the first black president, people saw hope, had hope and wanted hope. The style is great, it’s overall minimal but enough to recognize him. The style reminds me of a pop art and street art combo. The typography is timeless, you really can’t go wrong with it, and it is so versatile. Pastiche, I appreciate a good throwback and it fascinated me how we take styles and trend from the past and still give them a toss of lemon zest to make them fresh and current. And reviving previous styles, it’s clever, it could wake up some nostalgia and a feel of familiarity.

Animation Principles – Learning Activity

First week after the summer break, are we feeling rejuvenated yet? I’m certainly feeling ready to jump start the last semester, can’t believe it’s almost been two years since I started this graphic designer course and journey. I’m really looking forward to see where I end up by the new year.

This week we’re studying the principles of animation. I did a little sneak peek right before summer, and I’m very inspired by rubber hose style. I just think they are so bouncy and fun.

I created this character based on a current crises in my life, my wardrobe. In this day and age of sustainability I’m trying to make life simpler by having a defined “style”, so there wouldn’t be any questions when shopping and also limiting shopping. This character, Anna, is a Parisian inspired woman, she enjoys life, drink coffee and writes.

I used to draw a lot of anime style when I was younger and expressions are so fun! For later I will practice more expressions in the leather hosen style, because I don’t feel like these anime-ish style of expressions sits quite right with the Anna brand.

Playing With Ideas – Learning Activity

If the idea is at the heart of everything, then I would like you to think of a movie that you love. Then look at its current title sequence and come up with a new one. Sketch up the rough idea in the form of a storyboard. Your storyboard needs to be at 30 frames and should be for at least 1minute of motion design. Please scan and upload this activity to your WordPress blog.

Movie of choice: Inglorious Basterds

My favourite filmmaker is Quentin Tarantino, I love the way his movies look and especially his music choices. I recently watched Inglorious Basterds, one of my favourite movies. This title sequence is simple titles fades on and of on black screen, to a soundtrack filled with tension and magnitude. The movie’s title is written in a simple handwriting, contrasting to the other titles in big western like font. At first I thought it was strange and the movie title gives more big movie font than a flimsy handwriting, but then it would just blend in with the rest.

My problem with this title sequence, and in general, I bad at connecting faces and names. So a shot/clip of the actors would help me. Reviewing my storyboard I see this would take way too long and maybe combining the name with the clip would work better. Also all the squares should have a black background.

Visualise Your Ideas – Learning Activity

Create a mood board and storyboard using a word and its meaning as the concept. For example, you could use the word “prop”. You could then use the “r” to prop up the “p” that keeps falling over. That’s just to give you an idea, be creative and use a word and concept of your own. Please scan your mood board and storyboard and upload it to your WordPress blog.

The Roll

First thing that came up, was the iconic Pixar sequence. Then “roll” came to mind and I made this. In to the scene a rolling “o” and jumping behind. The “o” is then stopped by the “r”, maybe add a front flip in that jump and bam, then it’s spelled roll. They will then form a big ball and roll them selves out. Concept wise, it’s just text on a coloured background, keep it simple.

Workflow and Backup – Learning Activity

Written assignment

  • Draw a diagram of your preferred workflow and explain why you take certain steps
  • Create a checklist for your workflow
  • Take a screenshot of your folder structure
  • Explain why creating backups are so important

My workflow

At my current stage I don’t do any client work and rarely put anything to external storage, apart from sentimental photos or everyday life photos. In this digital age of rapid photo taking, photos doesn’t get the attention it used to. Looking through album I rarely see many almost identical photos, so I try to keep the moments condensed. As for my school work I keep the photos that really stands out and delete the rest. I keep. My routine is simple.

My mapping system isn’t the strongest at the moment. Last semester I mapped everything by week, but it was difficult to find what week I did what, so for this semester I made sure to make the big assignment more obvious. When I get around to find myself a sturdy and good hard drive I will sort things by occasion and date.

It is important to keep client work for backup, in case their files get lost by them, gets corrupted, or your own PC crashes. Putting thing to external backup frees space for your PC and keeps your PC up to speed.

A personal survey – Learning Activity

Having read the basics of surveys in detail, choose someone you know (other than yourself) and create a logo for that person according to the two steps below. The person may be a family member, a friend, a fellow student, a celebrity or anyone you could physically interview and who would be able to participate in your interview.

Step 1 Look at the Core Interview Questions on page 103 and conduct an interview with your chosen individual. Make sure that you get the data on what the person’s persona is: Who are they? What are their personal goals? How do they define success? Etc

Profile: Elvira
Who you are as a person: Soft and caring, but determent to reach her goals in life.
Passions: her dog, sustainability and her business studies .
Hobbies: Hiking and cooking.
Main goal: living her best life inline with her sustainable beliefs.
Future goal: Open a less waste shop.
Your style in 2-3 words:
Preferred color palette: Earth tones.
Favorite color: Blue.
*Note: it’s fictional:*

Step 2 Now use this person’s name to create a logo for him/her. Remember to keep the previous criteria and guidelines we’ve covered on logos in mind. For the purposes of this assignment, you should create three logo options (of which at least one should be in full colour). There are no restrictions such as type-only, etc. so be creative! It is important, though, to treat this as a professional logo execution, which the “client” may wish to use in his/her own capacity.

My favorite is the middle ones, they’re minimal, but playful. I did all logos by hand on my iPad for efficiency. Another and probably better option would be a serif type with rounded serifs, to reflect softness and structure.

Step 3 Publish the answers/data from your survey as well as a rationale (a document in which you explain and interpret your ideas) for your logos, based on this research. Also hand in the three options of the logos as PDFs and tell me which one is your favourite, as well as which one your client preferred

Preparing for Brand Development – Learning Activity

1. Refer to the Brand Brief Schematic on p.121 and write, in detail, the following about your client from Assignment 1:

  • Attributes
  • Vision and mission
  • Key products or services – list these in detail
  • Key competitors – list three
  • Competitive advantage
  • Key stakeholders
  • Value proposition
  • Target market

First of all I think it’s incredibly weird to write up a person’s personal «competitors» and «key product or services» and I can’t be bothered. Instead I will explain each point for myself, because I think some of them blend to much and I struggle to differentiate them.

  • Attributes – noun;a quality or feature regarded as a characteristic or inherent part of someone or something.
  • Vision and mission – What do you want to achieve, bring to the table and how will you take it further.
  • Key products or services – list these in detail – What are your products/service, what makes them great.
  • Key competitors – list three – Who are your direct competition.
  • Competitive advantage – What are your advantages compered to your competitors.
  • Key stakeholders – Persons with direct interest in your company. Stakeholders, on the other hand, are groups or individuals who are directly impacted by the decisions and actions of an organization or company.
  • Value proposition – noun: (in marketing) an innovation, service, or feature intended to make a company or product attractive to customers.
  • Target market – Audiences are the receivers of messages. Our job as the audience is to observe the performance, not to participate in it.

2. Gather your findings and analyse the one or two interviews you’ve done. Then type up your findings and create your own brief. Your brief should include any insight you may have gained from these interviews. The purpose of the brief is to create a brand. This step of the assignment is the creation of a brief only – you do not have to develop the brand yet.Publish your data from Step 1 and your brief in Step 2 in PDF format. Make sure that the document is neat and well presented.

Learning Activity – Planning a Fashion Shoot

Question 1

Written assignment

  • In your own words, describe the procedure of planning a fashion shoot. You don’t need to go into too much detail, a short outline will do.
  • What are the stylist’s duties?
  • List your duties as photographer
  • What equipment would you take along on the Alice in Wonderland shoot that was featured in this module?
  • Find an editorial fashion spread in a fashion magazine. Explain what you think the concept was, what equipment they used and how the location affected the concept. Scan or photograph the shoot and hand it in along with your answer.

The procedure of planning a fashion shoot.

  1. State the theme or concept
  2. Mood board – a collage of inspiration, it helps your team to see what you as the photographer are visualising.
  3. Story board – It’s like a roadmap for the shoot. Including sketches of angles, position, the length you will be shooting at and lighting.
  4. Location scouting.
  5. Shootlist – is a list that organises your day and list things you need to take with you.
  6. Choose model.
  7. Appoint stylist – a stylist is in charge of costumes and props, they also help with the development of the idea. It’s a essential to meet the stylist beforehand.
  8. Appoint hair and make-up artist.

Example: equipment list

  • Lens
  • Camera body
  • Memory card
  • Battery charger
  • Extra battery (fully charged)
  • Light set
  • Diffuser boxes

ISABELI FONTANA ENCHANTS IN DOLCE & GABBANA FOR HARPER’S BAZAAR

Isabeli Fontana Enchants in Dolce & Gabbana for Harper's Bazaar

This photo shoot in Sicily by some ancient temple showcases Dolce & Gabbana’s collection, inspired by the ancient Greek’s beautiful art, marble statues and architecture. In this picture I believe they mostly use the natural light and shine from the golden hour. Later on in the shoot it turns dark and has to use quite harsh but diffused artificial lightning.

HYUN JOO HWANG LOOKS SUBURBAN CHIC IN HARPER’S BAZAAR SINGAPORE

Hyun Joo Hwang Looks Suburban Chic in Harper's Bazaar Singapore

This photo shoot has this 60’s futurism feel to it. The model’s makeup and hair styling is very 60’s/70’s and the clothes a modern version. I would guess the theme would be around the first moon landing. For this photo I believe they used natural light and reflector maybe.

AKIIMA POSES IN VIBRANT FASHIONS FOR MARIE CLAIRE ITALY

Akiima Poses in Vibrant Fashions for Marie Claire Italy

This colorful shoot focuses on clean contrast to extenuate colors. It could be taken by a window or a diffused light and a reflector on the side, creating these soft shadows.

Work Process – Learning Activity

Establishing a brand’s identity is obviously important for the brand to know who they are, for designers to know what needs to be expressed through a logo, an ad or graphic. This also connects with the consumer.

Conduct research
Write down different means of conducting research, what can be done to collect information and consumers perspective on a proposed idea.

First I ask the company brand them self, what do they associate with, what describes them, their history, what are they selling, who’s their target and what their goals are. As for consumers I like to get my info quick and watch reactions, maybe go around and ask “what’s the first that comes to mind when you think of….” and ask both regulars consumers and others. Could also use surveys as an alternative.

Clarify the strategy
What do think should be included in a creative brief, what would you consider vital information for you as a designer?

For the brief, it should be clear and include what I mentioned above as well as some input from the audience.

• Who they are
• What they provide
• Who their target group is
• What they want to achieve
• Specialities

Design the identity
How would you approach the findings from the research and the clarified strategy, what would your first steps be once you’ve received feedback and a brief.

• Obviously first, it would be to read through it and check it the brand’s expectations fit with the consumer’s impression.
• Then visualise based on the research. Think of colours, fonts, shapes, imagery.
• I would find a picture or go through the brand’s website and write down whatever comes to mind and develop further into sketches.

Create touch points
What do you think is meant by touch points, what do you think should be included I; the term touch points?
Keep in mind that touch points are those things that connects consumers to your brand.

• I interpreters touch points as both places were they meet the consumers both physically and emotionally.
• Employees
• Shops
• Website
• Mailing lists
• Social media

Manage the assets
How would you nurture and grow the brand you have created?

• Grow with the audience, if possible
• Check up with the audience
• Set new goals
• Expand the brand’s product list or services. • Troubleshooting
