Layout – All Learning Activities

Basic principles of Layout

Trace out a magazine or a paper’s grid. What kind of grid is it, and is it consistent?

I traced one page from a recycling booklet, and three spreads from Søstrene Grenes food inspiration booklet. I kept my first trace because I found it very balanced and clear, it’s a two column with even margins. Throughout the booklet I found one- , two- and three- column-grinds.

For my next traces I found that the grind is consistently inconsistent. The grind widths doesn’t always match the next page but this is kept throughout. I think it create a interesting layout, it flows nicely and keeps the eye awake and makes it look for more..

Pace and Contrast

Here I got a spread of Søstrene Grene’s season magazine and a screen print of their DIY corner from their website. This magazine goes horizontal, it’s specious and I find it very elegant. Great big pictures with delicate details. The colors are well harmonized and calming.

The website goes vertical, it’s most natural for both mobile and computer display. It’s shows a mini brief of all the DIY projects . I find the whole thing to be a tad bit messy, it’s cramped . The pictures could be bigger, I think that would helped it a lot, I don’t want to scroll down this one, because it’s so much here and I can’t see it properly.

Form and Space

Here I’ve put together shapes with the intention to blend the background and figure. My inspiration for this I thought of a pattern were we all have asked our self «is it white with black stripes or black with white stripes?», the zebra pattern!

Symmetry /Asymmetry

Can you guess where each of these layouts are going? Staring from upper left we have: down-right, up-left-side, balanced, asymmetrical, and upwards.

Design of Layout in InDesign

As a final activity after studying layouts , what would be more fitting than actually making something in InDesign.

Our assignment is to create a tourist guide:
– in A4 format folded in half
– four pages
– write headlines and titles
– be mindful of layout/grid, type and pictures.

I chose to do my new hometown, Kristiansand. I’ve been here for 6 months now and wanted to get across how lovely this town is, especially in the summer, as I wrote in the headlines it’s really the Northern’s Palm Springs.

I wish my cover picture was big enough to actually cover the whole page, to I really liked the result, I find it charming. When most hear about Kristiansand , they immediately think of Dyreparken /Zoo. And it is incredible, no question about it, but I think the town is so beautiful!

After working with this mini project I can’t wait till summer is here! Also working in InDesign is slowly getting easier!
